ASX Soars as RBA's Dovish Tone Alleviates Rate Hike Fears
The Australian stock market saw a significant turnaround on Tuesday, driven by a speech from Reserve Bank of Australia Governor Michele Bullock. The RBA's dovish tone, while cautioning that more interest rate hikes may be necessary to control inflation, was enough to push the S&P ASX 200 up 0.52% for the day.
The materials sector was one notable exception, with mining stocks experiencing significant losses due to declines in Chinese lithium futures and other metals. PLS (ASX:PLS) plummeted 4.12% to $4.08 a share, its lowest point this year.
RBA Governor Bullock acknowledged that inflation remains a concern, citing the recent oil shocks and weak productivity growth as key challenges for the Australian economy.
