ASX Surges as Banks and Tech Shake Off Rate Hike Fears
Australian shares saw a modest increase on Friday, led by banks and tech stocks, despite traders shifting their expectations of a Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) rate hike to above 50%.
The sudden change in sentiment came after the release of hotter-than-expected inflation data, which caused markets to rapidly reset their expectations. According to LSEG, a financial markets data firm, the odds of a September RBA hike rose from 16% before Wednesday's release to better-than-even odds now.
This development has significant implications for various industries, as higher policy rates can affect different sectors differently. Banks, in particular, may benefit from wider lending spreads, while real estate stocks often struggle with lower valuations due to higher yields.
The tech sector, however, continues to perform well, driven by upbeat US AI headlines that remind investors of the importance of earnings momentum over rate fears in the short run.
