Auckland Deal Seeks 2.9% Regional GDP Growth by 2045
A new partnership between Central Government and Auckland Council has been signed in New Zealand, marking the country's first City and Regional Deal. The Auckland Deal aims to drive national economic growth and raise living standards over a 30-year period through a 10-year program of commitments.
The Deal sets out to unlock economic growth, deliver resilient and well-connected infrastructure, and boost the supply of affordable housing. To achieve this, land use and development will be coordinated, infrastructure investment aligned, and transport networks upgraded.
The central target is ambitious: a 2.9% higher regional GDP growth by 2045, contributing an additional $21.6 billion to the national economy. The Deal establishes clear expectations for both parties, with Central Government committing to strengthen coordination with Auckland Council on shared priorities and help it leverage its unique characteristics to lift economic performance.
Auckland Council's expectations include working towards the shared goal of 2.9% higher regional GDP growth by 2045, building a strong partnership with regular high-level engagement, and securing robust long-term planning that gives investors and communities certainty.
