AUD Edges Higher vs JPY on RBA Tightening Hopes and BoJ Normalization Speculation
The Australian Dollar (AUD) has seen an increase against the Japanese Yen (JPY), rising by 0.39% to trade around 112.65 at the time of writing.
This movement can be attributed to growing expectations of higher interest rates in Australia, following a stronger-than-expected economic growth in the second quarter, which has increased the likelihood of further monetary tightening as early as September.
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) may resume its monetary tightening cycle due to the resilience of the Australian economy, with 'RBA cash rate futures' showing that the odds of a 25bps hike on September 29 have jumped from 55% to nearly 80%, while markets are now pricing in 50bps of tightening over the next twelve months.
The Japanese Yen remains supported by expectations of a faster normalization of Japanese monetary policy, with recent comments from Bank of Japan (BoJ) board member Hajime Takata indicating that the central bank should raise interest rates more flexibly to address intensifying inflationary pressures.
