AUD Gains Relative-Rate Advantage Over NZD Amid RBA Tightening Fears
Currency analysts at MUFG have identified a relative-rate advantage for the Australian dollar over the New Zealand dollar, citing underpriced risks of further Reserve Bank of Australia tightening.
The bank's analysis suggests that investors are undervaluing the potential for additional rate hikes in Australia while overstating the likelihood of aggressive tightening by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ).
This perceived difference in monetary policy outlook gives the AUD a yield edge over the NZD, making it an attractive investment option.
However, MUFG also warns that record leveraged-fund shorts on the New Zealand dollar pose a significant risk to the trade, as a modest piece of positive news could trigger a sharp squeeze in the market.
