AUD/JPY Stabilizes as RBA and BoJ Signal Hawkish Intentions
The Australian Dollar and Japanese Yen have steadied against each other in recent trading as expectations of monetary tightening by their respective central banks offset JPY strength.
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has signaled hawkish intentions with officials commenting on the possibility of higher interest rates. RBA Assistant Governor Sarah Hunter said the central bank may need to raise interest rates again if inflation proves more persistent than expected, and Deputy Governor Andrew Hauser stated that inflation remains 'one big problem' for the Australian economy.
Markets now see a 72% chance that the RBA will raise its Official Cash Rate (OCR) to 4.6% at its next meeting, up from 54% at the start of the month, according to the RBA Rate Tracker.
The Japanese Yen remains supported by growing expectations of more aggressive monetary tightening from the Bank of Japan (BoJ), although its upside potential is limited by sharp rises in Oil prices due to the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran.
