AUD Retreats Amid Weaker Labor Market Data, USD Weakness
The Australian Dollar (AUD) has retreated by 0.22% against the US Dollar (USD) on Thursday, trading at around 0.7110. The weakness of the AUD comes after the release of data showing a decline in Australia's labor market in July. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), the economy lost 15.8K jobs in July, while markets had expected an increase of 15K.
The unemployment rate rose to 4.5% in July from 4.4% in June, exceeding market expectations for a steady reading of 4.4%. This unexpected downturn eases pressure on the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) to raise interest rates further to combat inflationary pressures.
BBH's Elias Haddad suggests that the easing labor market conditions support the RBA's decision to remain on hold for some time, reducing the need for tighter monetary policy. However, he notes that the AUD still benefits from solid fundamental support due to its attractive carry and strategic exposure to commodities linked to energy, AI, and defense.
The decline in AUD/USD is also limited by the weakness of the US Dollar (USD). The Greenback has been weighed down by the recent decline in US Treasury yields. The Department of the Treasury announced an increase in liquidity-support buyback operations for longer-dated government securities, which helped to reduce borrowing costs.
The outlook for US monetary policy remains uncertain, with some Federal Reserve officials suggesting that tighter policy could be necessary if inflation fails to slow sufficiently.
