AUD Soars to Three-Month High as Risk Appetite Improves
The Australian Dollar reached its highest point in three months on Thursday as risk appetite improved. The AUD/USD exchange rate climbed to 0.7198, a gain of 0.34%. Despite solid jobs data and hawkish comments from Federal Reserve officials, the US Dollar remained steady.
Wall Street extended its gains, boosted by NVIDIA's earnings report and lower-than-expected Initial Jobless Claims. However, other data showed that the Goods Trade Balance widened in July, a sign of weakening demand.
Federal Reserve officials at the Jackson Hole Symposium offered mixed views on inflation and monetary policy. Cleveland's Fed Beth Hammack emphasized the need to act now to curb sticky inflation, while Chicago Fed Austan Goolsbee downplayed concerns about inflation averaging three months.
Australian household spending rose by 1.1% in July, keeping consumer demand resilient and adding upward pressure on inflation. The Reserve Bank of Australia's (RBA) last meeting minutes suggested that the board discussed a possible rate hike.
