AUD Soars to Yearly Highs on RBA Rate Hike Repricing
Australian Dollar (AUD) gains momentum in August, rising 2.2% against the US Dollar (USD), following a 1.5% gain in July. This move leaves the AUD near year-to-date highs and makes it the best-performing G10 currency in 2026 with a 7.6% year-to-date increase.
The recent repricing of a Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) rate hike in November, triggered by hawkish minutes and upside surprises in July's Consumer Price Index (CPI), has contributed to the AUD's strength. The RBA board debated whether 'pre-emptive' tightening might be necessary due to inflation risks, with July's CPI data showing headline inflation at 3.5% YoY, above market expectations.
To break above its current range of 0.6833 to 0.7278, the AUD would need two external factors: a currency recovery across most of Asia, particularly in CNY, KRW, and JPY, and a weak USD amid policy credibility concerns following the US Treasury's bond buybacks.
