AUD Steadies as RBA Keeps Rates Unchanged Amid Inflation Concerns
The Australian Dollar (AUD) has stabilized following the Reserve Bank of Australia's (RBA) decision to keep interest rates unchanged. The central bank's cautious approach reflects a delicate balancing act between controlling inflation and avoiding an economic slowdown.
Commerzbank analysts point out that while headline inflation has moderated, underlying measures remain elevated, keeping the RBA on alert. 'The RBA is in a wait-and-see mode,' said Commerzbank's note. 'Inflation is not falling fast enough to warrant a rate cut, but the economy is not strong enough to justify a hike.'
The market implications for the AUD are significant. The currency has been trading in a narrow range against the US dollar, with the yield differential between Australian and US government bonds playing a key role. As of this week, the 10-year Australian government bond yield stands at around 4.2%, while the equivalent US Treasury yields 4.5%, a gap that continues to weigh on the Aussie.
Commerzbank suggests that unless the RBA signals a more hawkish path or inflation surprises to the upside, the AUD is likely to remain rangebound. 'The market has already priced out most rate cuts for 2025,' the note added. 'Any shift in that pricing would be the primary driver for a breakout.'
