AUD Surges as JPY Falters Amid Japan's Fiscal Woes
The Australian Dollar (AUD) has seen significant gains against the Japanese Yen (JPY), rising by 0.70% on Monday, as the JPY faces renewed selling pressure due to Japan's unexpected current account deficit and fiscal concerns.
Japan's Ministry of Finance attributed the increase in outflows partly to higher oil prices and significant dividend payments to foreign investors. The country's public debt has exceeded 200% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), fueling concerns about long-term debt sustainability, despite recent interventions aimed at supporting the JPY.
Meanwhile, the Bank of Japan (BoJ) maintains a tightening bias, with most officials supporting further policy normalization. However, Japanese interest rates remain relatively low compared to other major economies.
Investors are awaiting the Reserve Bank of Australia's monetary policy decision on Tuesday, which is widely expected to keep the benchmark interest rate unchanged at 4.35%. The RBA will observe market conditions and data before making a decision.
