AUD Surges on Hawkish RBA Outlook and Rising Inflation Expectations
The Australian Dollar has gained strength against its major peers after the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) hinted at potential interest rate hikes. The central bank's August meeting saw no changes to the cash rate, but a warning that inflation is likely to remain elevated due to higher oil prices. This led to expectations that the RBA may raise rates as soon as September.
NAB forecasts a 25-basis-point increase in September, while Commonwealth Bank and ANZ expect the next move in November. Westpac, however, expects rates to remain unchanged.
The US Dollar struggles to attract strong buying interest despite hawkish comments from Fed officials on Thursday, remaining in consolidation mode ahead of Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's speech at the Jackson Hole Symposium on Friday. The event could provide fresh clues on the Fed's interest rate outlook and serve as a directional catalyst for AUD/USD.
The stronger-than-expected inflation figures have reinforced expectations that the RBA could raise interest rates, with the Australian Dollar trading around 0.7197 at levels last seen in mid-May.
