AUD Surges on Rising Rate Hike Expectations

The Australian Dollar (AUD) has been showing strength due to rising expectations of an interest rate hike by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA). The RBA's decision was influenced by a hotter-than-expected July inflation report, which showed persistent price pressures. National Australia Bank now predicts a rate increase to 4.6% at the September meeting.

BNY Mellon's Geoff Yu notes that while the index remains below trend for a seventh straight month, it is now only marginally negative. This suggests an economy that is soft rather than weak. However, upside potential for the AUD may be capped by steady performance from the US Dollar (USD).
