AUD Takes Breather on Tougher RBA Signals

The Australian dollar has taken a breather near $0.7220 after a strong run, as investors weigh tougher signals from the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) against renewed geopolitical jitters.

This week, Deputy Governor Andrew Hauser said the board will discuss the case for a rate hike at its September 28-29 meeting and expressed concerns about inflation. This has led markets to raise the implied chance of a move this month to 75% from 67% a day earlier, with Goldman Sachs also bringing forward its call for the next hike.

The RBA's tougher stance on interest rates tends to push up short-term Australian bond yields, making the currency more attractive to global investors. However, this support can fade when headlines make investors more defensive, and the US dollar often benefits in such situations.
