AUD Tumbles on Risk-Off Sentiment and RBA Caution
The Australian Dollar (AUD) has been the worst performing G10 currency overnight, despite being the best performer year-to-date. The decline is attributed to renewed risk-off sentiment in the market, which was triggered by a sell-off in AI-related chip stocks and concerns over Chinese semiconductor advancements.
According to MUFG's Lee Hardman, this risk-off environment has made it challenging for high-beta currencies like the AUD, which had benefited from the AI build-out. The AUD has been one of the best performing G10 currencies this year due to its exposure to this sector.
However, comments from Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) Governor Bullock have further weighed on the AUD. While not signaling an imminent rate hike, his remarks did little to boost expectations for a future increase in interest rates.
