AUDUSD Bullish Trend Faces Headwinds Ahead of Key Inflation Data
The Australian dollar (AUD) has been performing strongly against major currencies since December 2024, making it the best-performing currency among eight majors. Currently trading at around 0.7150, AUDUSD faces competing pressures from a weak U.S. dollar and a slowing Australian economy. The market's expectations for an interest rate hike by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) have decreased following yesterday's employment data, which showed a decline in jobs and rising unemployment.
The upcoming Consumer Price Index (CPI) release will be closely watched as it may influence the RBA's decision to raise interest rates. A higher-than-expected CPI print would support further rate hikes, while a softer reading could keep the pair capped and confirm that the RBA can remain on hold.
Analysts are warning about various risks affecting Australia, including inflation concerns driven by the U.S.-Iran conflict, the $40 trillion debt milestone in the U.S., and the potential impact of an El Niño event on wheat harvests. The relative monetary policy between the RBA and the Federal Reserve also remains a key theme, with markets expecting the Fed to tighten its policy more aggressively.
