August CPI Report Pivotal in Fed Rate Decision

The August Consumer Price Index (CPI) report, set to be released on Friday at 8:30am ET, may determine whether the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates for the first time since July 2023. The report is seen as a crucial gauge of inflation before the Fed's September 16 rate announcement.

Economists project a 3.3% annual price gain for last month, marking a cooling from May's three-year peak of 4.2%. The data could help Fed officials assess whether this recent moderation signals a durable pattern or if inflation is stubbornly embedded amid elevated fuel costs linked to the Iran war.

As the primary mechanism for reining in inflation, raising borrowing costs serves as the Fed's central mandate. Almost half of the policymakers expressed support for a rate increase later in the year during the last gathering.
