August Inflation Rise Sets Stage for Fed Rate Decision
The latest inflation data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that prices continued to rise in August, setting up a crucial decision for the Federal Reserve. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased by 0.4 percent for the month, which aligns with Wall Street forecasts and brings annual inflation to 3.4 percent.
The core prices, excluding food and energy, rose by 0.3 percent. Notably, gasoline prices surged by 3.9 percent in August, accounting for more than a third of the overall increase. The broader energy index also increased by 2.1 percent due to ongoing market volatility caused by the Iran War.
The inflation data will be the last major reading before the Federal Reserve's policy meeting next week, where officials will consider raising interest rates for the first time in three years. Despite economic uncertainty, stocks rose on Friday, with the Dow, S&P 500, and Nasdaq all experiencing gains.
