August Jobs Report Looms Large for Fed Amid Changing Labor Market

The US economy's labor market will be in focus this week as the August jobs report is set to be released on Friday. The report comes after a surprise decline of 23,000 jobs in July and a revision downward of jobs added in June.

Economists say that the workforce is changing due to widespread use of AI, evolving tariff and trade policies, and slower immigration. This has resulted in fewer college graduates and prime-age workers finding jobs, with some giving up on looking for work or deciding they can retire.

The Federal Reserve will be closely monitoring the report as it considers its next move on interest rates. A deterioration in the labor market could make a Fed rate hike less likely, but holding rates steady or cutting them could have negative effects on curbing inflation.
