August Jobs Report Masks Persistent Problems in US Labor Data

The US jobs report for August showed strong hiring numbers, but experts say that masks persistent problems with the data. The unemployment rate remains steady at 4.1 percent. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), nonfarm payroll employment increased by 162,000 in August, while the civilian labor force rose by 683,000.

However, critics point out that the BLS's household data is flawed due to annual revisions and population adjustments. The experimental series, which adjusts for these issues, shows a more accurate picture of employment numbers. In December 2025, the standard data showed an employment level of 163,992,000, while the adjusted data showed 162,557,000.

This discrepancy highlights the importance of using caution when interpreting job market data. The BLS notes that official establishment survey estimates are not updated based on the preliminary benchmark revision, which will be published in August 2026.
