The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that nonfarm payrolls increased by 162,000 in August, significantly exceeding the consensus estimate of 55,000. This represents a substantial gain and is nearly triple the average monthly increase over the previous 12 months.

The labor market's strong performance also led to upward revisions of previously reported payroll readings. June employment was revised higher to 31,000 from an initially reported 20,000, while July's figure was revised to a 21,000 gain from a decline of 23,000.

However, the unemployment rate remained at 4.1% in August, and the labor force participation rate edged up to 61.6%, although it remains half a percentage point below January's level.
