August Jobs Report Surprises with Strong Hiring

The US job market showed a surprising rebound in August as employers added 162,000 jobs, exceeding the forecasted 65,000. The unemployment rate remained at a low 4.1%, according to the Labor Department's report.

Retailers and restaurants led the charge with 59,000 new hires, followed by construction companies with 22,000 and manufacturers with 16,000 jobs added. Factory employment has increased by 58,000 since hitting a recent low in December.

The strong hiring numbers may increase the likelihood of another interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve when it meets next month. The solid job growth suggests that current borrowing costs are not high enough to restrain the economy and curb inflation.
