Aussie Dollar Poised for Historic Rally Against Yen
The Australian dollar is poised to climb back toward its 35-year high against the yen as Tokyo's currency intervention fades and the Reserve Bank of Australia maintains a hawkish stance.
The Aussie-yen exchange rate has already begun recovering from a drop of over 4% towards the 109 level following Japanese intervention. Analysts expect further gains, with some predicting it will return to its late-July levels around 113.38 or even as high as 114.80.
Mahjabeen Zaman, head of FX research at ANZ Group Holdings Ltd., said that 'much of the shift on the yen leg is done' and further Japanese intervention is unlikely given clear signaling from the US on potential coordinated action.
Rate differentials between Australia and Japan are expected to drive the exchange rate, with the RBA's upcoming policy decision on August 11 a key event. Analysts are split on whether interest rates will remain steady or be raised further, which could impact the Aussie-yen cross.
