Aussie Dollar Soars as Yen Weakness Worries US and Japan
The Australian dollar is climbing back towards its highest level in decades against the Japanese yen. This has caused alarm bells to ring for both the US and Japanese governments, which have been working together to prop up the value of the yen.
Japan's economy has been sluggish since the 1990s due to its deflationary nature, but a weak yen can make its exports cheaper and more competitive. However, this also makes imports more expensive for Japan, putting pressure on living costs.
The US government is concerned that if the yen continues to weaken, Japan may need to sell large amounts of US debt, which could lead to higher interest rates for the US. This would undermine President Trump's efforts to boost local manufacturing by imposing tariffs on countries like Japan.
