Aussie Dollar Soars on RBA Hike Expectations and Robust Economic Data
The Australian dollar has gained strength in recent days due to improved economic data and rising expectations for an interest rate hike by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA). The probability of a September 29 RBA hike has surged to 76%, up from less than 10% in late August. This increase in hawkish pricing has driven the Aussie against major European currencies, particularly the EUR/AUD and GBP/AUD pairs.
A series of strong economic releases has fueled the rally, including upside surprises in inflation, household spending, and GDP growth. The Citi Economic Surprise Index, which measures the difference between actual and forecasted data, has flipped positive and risen 100.9 points since July, its largest increase over an equivalent period seen across the past five years.
While the RBA's rate hike expectations are now more pronounced, other central banks face a less compelling case for tightening policy due to ongoing supply shocks from high energy prices. The Aussie has benefited from recent strength in commodity prices, particularly metals, which has provided a tailwind against major European currencies.
