Aussie Dollar Surges on Rate Hike Bets as Inflation Data Spikes
Australia's currency has hit a three-month high after a hotter-than-expected inflation reading led investors to bet on a potential interest rate hike by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA).
The Australian dollar climbed to around $0.7204 as traders priced in a 52% chance of a quarter-point rate increase as soon as next month.
This sudden jump was fueled by expectations that higher borrowing costs would attract investors looking for better returns, especially if US interest rates aren't rising as fast.
However, FX strategist Ray Attrill from National Australia Bank warns that the rate tailwind has limits. He sees the Australian dollar trading between $0.6850 and $0.7278 over the year, with $0.7204 near the ceiling.
