Aussie Legends Weigh In on Drag Racing's Economic Crunch

Australia's top drag racing teams are balancing the need for more competition with the rising costs of participating in the sport. Morice McMillin, a seasoned competitor, believes that the current six-round series is the right number given the economic climate. However, he also thinks there's room for more events in different locations.

McMillin points out that teams need to consider not just the cost of racing but also where and how the tracks fit into their schedule. With events already scheduled at Sydney Dragway, The Bend, and Willowbank Raceway twice next year, Victoria is likely to be added to the mix, along with Perth and Darwin.

The team's car count is a problem, averaging around five or six entries per round in Top Fuel and Nitro Funny Car. McMillin suggests combining both classes under a Super Nitro class as a one-off event, similar to the Night Under Fire spectacle at Norwalk in America.

McMillin emphasizes that any change in the value of the Australian dollar has a direct effect on racing costs. With the Aussie dollar fluctuating between 59 cents and 71 cents against the US greenback, teams are feeling the pinch.
