Australia Household Spending Surges Amid Electric Vehicle Boom
Australia's household spending rose sharply in June, reaching A$81.3 billion ($56.92 billion), according to data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
This marked a 0.8% increase from May and a three-month high for annual spending growth, which hit 6%. The data also showed that consumers continued to adjust their spending behavior in response to rising fuel prices, with electric vehicle sales accounting for an increasingly larger share of new vehicle sales.
New vehicle sales drove a 3.0% rise within the transport category, while air travel spending returned to pre-conflict levels and fuel spending rose 7.8%. Recreation and culture also saw a gain, up 1.4%, due in part to increased spending on electronic goods, live entertainment, and gambling activities.
The Reserve Bank of Australia has raised interest rates three times this year to combat inflation, which is expected to cool the housing market and weigh on sales. The central bank is also monitoring how falling house prices could impact consumer spending through the wealth effect.
