Australia's economy has outperformed forecasts, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. The country's growth rate came in at 0.4% for the June quarter and 2.1% over the year to June 30, beating economist predictions. This unexpected growth has increased expectations that the Reserve Bank of Australia will raise interest rates.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers said that despite challenging global circumstances, Australia's economy has shown relative strength. He noted that annual growth is as strong or stronger than every major advanced economy, including the United States. However, economists warn that there may be weaknesses beneath the surface, with productivity remaining poor and per-capita GDP flat.

The data also showed that household consumption rose 0.4% in the quarter, contributing half of overall growth. Discretionary spending was driven largely by vehicle purchases, with record electric and hybrid vehicle sales lifting the category. In contrast, essentials spending fell 0.3% due to reduced heating demand and high fuel prices.
