Australian Banks Forecast Another Interest Rate Hike Amid Inflation Concerns
Australia's major banks have revised their forecasts to predict another interest rate hike by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) in response to stubbornly high inflation and a surprise surge in retail spending. The NAB, Commonwealth Bank, and ANZ banks now project that the RBA will raise rates before the end of 2026.
The revised forecasts were triggered by data showing underlying inflation remained at 3.6 percent annually and retail spending grew by 1.1 percent in July alone, nearly quadruple the anticipated growth rate. This unexpected surge pushed the annual spending growth rate to a blistering 7 percent, marking the fastest pace of expansion in over three years.
The RBA prioritizes underlying metrics, which indicates that inflation operates dangerously above its mandated 2.5 percent target band. NAB economists warned that the RBA's preferred quarterly trimmed mean measure will likely exceed 1 percent in September, destroying any justification for maintaining current rate levels.
