Australian Consumer Confidence Sees Slight Boost on Eased Inflation Worries
Australian consumer confidence has experienced a slight boost in recent weeks, according to the latest data from ANZ-Roy Morgan. The consumer confidence index rose by 3.5 points to 74.7 between July 27th and August 2nd, as inflation worries eased.
The improvement was broad-based, with people feeling better about their personal finances and more willing to make big purchases. The 'time to buy a major household item' gauge climbed by 4.9 points to 77.6, indicating that households are less anxious about making large purchases.
One key driver of the improvement was a decrease in inflation expectations, which fell from 5.9% to 5.5%. ANZ economist Sophia Angala noted that this drop supports market pricing for the Reserve Bank of Australia to keep its policy rate steady at the August meeting.
