Australian Economy Expands Modestly Amid Rising Interest Rates
Australia's economy grew just 0.4% in the June quarter of 2026, according to the latest National Accounts data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). This modest expansion takes annual growth to 2.1%. While the economy continues to expand, the composition of growth highlights a more complex picture.
Business investment declined, household spending remained subdued, and export activity provided a meaningful contribution to overall growth. The Reserve Bank of Australia's (RBA) cash rate has remained at 4.35% after a period of tighter monetary policy, and underlying inflation is still above target.
The impact of higher interest rates on the economy is becoming more visible, particularly in household spending and business investment. Household consumption increased only 0.4% during the quarter, while private business investment declined 0.5%. Investment in areas such as data centres continued to support annual growth.
