Australian Economy Stands Firm Amid Global Headwinds

Australia's economy has shown remarkable resilience in the face of external headwinds. In July, Reserve Bank of Australia Assistant Governor Sarah Hunter noted that the oil shock had impacted consumer and business confidence, but there were few signs of a marked slowdown in activity.

Despite higher interest rates and tighter financial conditions, private demand remained an important source of growth. Business investment saw a strong increase during the quarter, particularly in spending on machinery and equipment, with data-centre investment in New South Wales and Victoria contributing to the rise.

The oil shock did not translate into an economic shock, with higher fuel prices having only a relatively contained effect on overall activity. Hunter argued that supply shocks can't always be looked through by policymakers, as prolonged price pressure can affect inflation expectations.
