Australian Home Loans Plummet 5.4% in June Quarter
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has released data showing a 5.4% drop in new home loans for the June quarter, with the number falling to 134,225.
This decline is consistent with lending conditions that have been changing over the past few quarters, according to Dr Mish Tan, ABS head of finance statistics.
The Reserve Bank of Australia has increased the cash rate three times in 2026, and changes to negative gearing and capital gains tax were announced in the federal budget in May, set to commence in July 2027.
In terms of value, total new home loans fell by $5.4 billion (5.2%) this quarter, following a 3.4% fall in the previous quarter.
The number of investor loans dropped by 8.6% (-4,966 loans) after a 4.7% fall in the March quarter, with New South Wales, Victoria, and Queensland leading the decline.
