Australian Homeowners Face Record Mortgage Stress Amid Interest Rate Uncertainty
Thousands of Australian homeowners are facing the risk of defaulting on their loans due to rising interest rates and higher inflation. A recent study by Digital Finance Analytics (DFA) found that the number of households in trouble jumped 18% across the country over the last three months.
The research highlighted significant risk for four key states and territories, with Queensland experiencing the second-highest net jump in the country after Western Australia. At least 9,500 households in Queensland were negatively affected during this period.
DFA director Martin North stated that many Australians who bought a home in recent years have reached a 'tipping point' due to rising house prices and reduced cash flow. He emphasized that this is not just about time in cash flow stress but also reflects a deeper issue.
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has raised interest rates three times so far in 2026, reaching 4.35%. The next RBA meeting on August 10 and 11 will likely determine the future direction of interest rates.
