Australian Inflation Worries: Many Confused About Central Bank's Role

Australia's central bank, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA), has raised interest rates three times this year in an effort to combat high inflation. However, a recent survey suggests that many Australians are confused about how monetary policy works and may not fully understand the RBA's efforts.

The survey found that only 25% of respondents correctly answered that higher interest rates would lower inflation, while more than half believed it would increase inflation. This misconception could lead to inflationary expectations continuing to rise, making it harder for the RBA to achieve its goal of low and stable inflation.

RBA Governor Michele Bullock noted that 'inflation is still too high' and emphasized the need for better communication about monetary policy. The survey also found that Australians have a high level of trust in the RBA, with majorities believing it makes decisions based on facts, acts with integrity, and is open and honest.

However, some respondents held misconceptions about the RBA's responsibilities, including thinking it regulates banks or sets tax rates. The RBA has clarified its role in setting interest rates, producing banknotes, and overseeing the payments system, but may need to find new ways to communicate its message effectively.
