Australian Job Ads Bounce Back Amid Higher Borrowing Costs
Australian job advertisements saw a modest increase in July, defying expectations amidst higher borrowing costs. According to data from Australia and New Zealand Banking Group and employment website Indeed, job ads rose by 0.8% month-over-month.
This rebound followed a decline of 0.1% the previous month. Notably, advertisements for management and physician & surgeon positions led the gains, with these occupations experiencing significant growth over the past year.
The labour market has demonstrated resilience in recent months, with the economy creating 76,300 net jobs in June while keeping the unemployment rate steady at 4.4%. Despite three interest rate hikes this year to combat inflation, the Reserve Bank of Australia's (RBA) efforts have yet to significantly impact the labour market.
