Australian Unemployment Rate Rises, But Experts Say Labour Market Remains Strong
Australia's unemployment rate ticked up to 4.5% in July, but according to CreditorWatch, this increase does not signal a weakening of the labour market.
The rise is largely due to rounding, with the jobless rate moving from 4.43% in June to 4.46% in July. Employment fell by 16,000 in July, falling short of economists' expectations for a 12,000 increase.
CreditorWatch's Chief Economist, Ivan Colhoun, stated that the jobless rate should be treated with caution as it was only a slight increase and other indicators had not shown a clear drop in labour demand. He pointed out that SEEK job ads fell sharply in May and edged lower again in June and July, while ANZ-Indeed job ads did not show the same easing.
Colhoun also noted that underemployment and youth unemployment improved slightly in July, which had risen in recent months. The Reserve Bank of Australia's tightening cycle was seen as potentially having ended by some economists, but Colhoun remained cautious about reading too much into these moves.
