Australians Clueless on Reserve Bank's Role: Survey Reveals Alarming Lack of Understanding

The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has conducted a survey to gauge public understanding of its role and actions. The results are concerning, as they show that most Australians lack knowledge about what the RBA does and how it affects the economy.

Over 9000 people were surveyed across three separate surveys, and the results revealed widespread misconceptions about the RBA's goals and actions. For example, nearly half of respondents believed that higher interest rates would increase economic activity, while a third thought they would decrease unemployment. However, the RBA raises interest rates to control inflation, not boost employment.

The survey also showed that 59% of Australians believe that when the RBA lifts interest rates, it is increasing inflation. This is the opposite of the bank's goal, which is to reduce inflation and keep prices stable between 2-3%. Only 27% of respondents understood this core objective.
