Australians in the Dark About Reserve Bank's Role
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has commissioned a survey to understand how Australians experience and comprehend the economy, particularly in relation to its key functions. The results were disappointing, revealing that most people lack understanding about what the RBA does and its objectives.
About 51% of respondents believed higher interest rates reduce unemployment, while an astonishing 59% thought that when the RBA lifts rates, it increases inflation. Only 27% recognized that the bank's core central bank objective is to reduce inflation.
The survey also found that many people are confused about how interest rates affect economic activity. Just over half of those quizzed correctly agreed that higher interest rates would slow economic activity, while a third believed they would increase it, and 18% were unsure.
