Australia's Company Profits Miss Forecasts as Cost Pressures Persist
Australia's company gross operating profits rose by only 1.8% in Q2 of this year, falling short of economists' forecasts for a 2% increase. This figure reflects the ongoing cost pressures faced by businesses across various sectors.
The data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) indicates that the mining sector saw a modest growth of 2.1%, while manufacturing and construction posted gains of 1.5% and 2.3%, respectively. However, the retail and hospitality sectors experienced declines due to subdued consumer spending amidst high interest rates.
The quarterly miss suggests that profit growth is cooling down, which could lead to a downward revision in GDP estimates for the June quarter. This, in turn, may influence the Reserve Bank of Australia's (RBA) policy stance on interest rates.
