Australia's Economy Expands, But Living Standards Stagnate
Australia's economy expanded by 0.4% in the June quarter, driven mainly by record sales of imported electric vehicles.
The country's gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 2.1% for the year to June, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, slightly exceeding market expectations.
However, experts note that overall growth remains subdued, with spending growth and business investment only occurring in 'pockets' of the economy.
The economy's performance is unlikely to influence the Reserve Bank of Australia's interest rate decisions, as it aligns with their forecasts for 2025-26.
Despite this, the national accounts reveal that the average Australian's living standards are not improving, with real net national disposable income per capita remaining stagnant over the past five years.
