Australia's Inflation Rate Eases to 0.5% in August, RBA Relief on the Horizon
Australia's TD Securities-Melbourne Institute inflation gauge cooled to 0.5% in August, down from 1.0% in July.
The slower pace of growth indicates a moderation in price pressures across the economy, with smaller increases in prices for housing, food, and transport compared to the prior month.
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) may find this development some relief as it assesses the path of inflation. The central bank has maintained a cautious stance, with interest rates on hold at 4.35% since late 2023, as it seeks to bring inflation back to its 2-3% target band.
A sustained easing in the TD-MI gauge could influence the RBA's policy deliberations later this year, but a single monthly figure is not a decisive indicator.
