Australia's Inflation Surprise Sparks Rate Hike Fears
Australia's inflation rate has surged higher than expected in July, sparking renewed speculation about a potential interest rate hike by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA).
The Australian Bureau of Statistics reported that consumer prices rose 1.0% from June, exceeding economists' forecasts of 0.8%. The annual inflation rate slowed to 3.5%, but remained above expectations.
The RBA has kept its cash rate at 4.35% for two consecutive meetings, but it has indicated that it will tighten policy if inflation doesn't cool as expected.
Markets are now pricing a high likelihood of a rate hike by early next year, with the implied chance of a move in September rising to 27% from 17%. This increased expectation is already affecting mortgage pricing, with lenders adjusting their variable-rate discounts and fixed-rate loan prices.
