Australia's Institutions Plagued by Crisis of Trust and Lack of Understanding

Australia's institutions are facing a severe crisis of trust, with 59% of citizens having an entirely mistaken understanding of how interest rates and inflation work. This lack of comprehension is compounded by a declining trust in institutions, with the Reserve Bank of Australia averaging a score of 5.5 out of 10 for trust.

According to Governor-General Sam Mostyn, there is a 'woeful lack of understanding' of democratic tenets. Mostyn believes this failure to engage with and understand civic underpinnings has led to a growing catastrophe.

The crisis is not just about a lack of comprehension but also the influence of money in politics. A recent national conference showed that factions within federal Labor ensured everything operated like clockwork, while a series of fundraisers raised concerns about potential corruption linked to powerful union influence.
