Australia's Jobless Rate Hits Near Five-Year High as Employment Falls
The Australian employment market took an unexpected turn in July, with net employment falling by 15,800 jobs. This drop in employment was a significant departure from the previous month's revised increase of 80,300 jobs.
The jobless rate rose to 4.5%, its highest level since late 2021. This figure is higher than the forecasted 4.4% and exceeds the Reserve Bank of Australia's (RBA) prediction that it would reach 4.5% by the end of the year.
Economists are attributing this development to a cooling labor market, which may ease pressure on the RBA to raise interest rates again. However, there is still a possibility of an interest rate hike before the end of the year if inflation risks materialize.
