Avocado Demand to Boost New Zealand Growers
New Zealand avocado growers are eyeing an increase in domestic demand, which could bring tens of millions of dollars to the industry.
The sector is forecast to produce almost 8 million trays of avocados in 2026-27, with nearly 3 million for the domestic market and almost 5 million for export.
Lifting New Zealanders' avocado consumption to Australian levels could generate additional demand worth over $90 million annually at current values, according to NZ Avocado chief executive Brad Siebert.
The industry is already self-sufficient in fresh avocados, with no imports, meaning that increased domestic demand directly supports locally grown fruit.
