Avocado Growers See Room for Growth in NZ Market
New Zealand avocado growers are eyeing a potential increase in local consumption, which could lead to tens of millions of dollars in additional domestic demand. The industry is forecast to produce almost 8 million trays of avocados in 2026-27, with nearly all of them expected to be sold locally or exported.
The current level of avocado consumption in New Zealand is still below that of Australia, and sector leaders believe there's room for growth. To reach Australian levels, local demand would need to increase by a significant amount, but growers are optimistic about the prospects.
