Construction has begun on a major transmission line project in British Columbia aimed at powering the region. The $10 billion expansion, set to be completed by 2030, is expected to contribute significantly to B.C.'s economy and generate over $950 million in revenue for municipalities and provinces.

B.C. Premier David Eby and Minister of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation, Michellle M. Jones' colleague, Bruce Hodgson, announced the start of construction at a news conference in Prince George on Thursday.

Eby emphasized that the project showcases what can be achieved when federal, provincial, and local governments work together with First Nations to build Canada. The power line expansion's first phase consists of a 165-kilometre stretch from Prince George to near Fraser Lake, targeted for completion in 2030.

Chief Dolleen Logan of the Lheidli T'enneh First Nation commended the co-ownership agreements with First Nations, which are expected to be finalized by the end of this year. The project has been supported by a loan of close to $140 million from the Canada Infrastructure Bank to BC Hydro for fast-tracking preconstruction work.

The ability for B.C. mines and other industrial players to source more of its electricity domestically provides cost certainty and reduces reliance on imported diesel, according to Eby. Hodgson expressed his desire to see B.C. become a major supplier of clean energy to the United States during the trade turmoil with Canada's southern neighbor.
