Bailey Dismisses Interest Rate Hike Rumors, Cites Energy Price Concerns
Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey has dismissed speculation about a secret plan to raise interest rates. He told MPs that expectations from financial markets do not guarantee an increase, and there is no set direction for monetary policy.
Bailey acknowledged that there are 'upside risks' to inflation, with energy prices being a major concern. This has led some economists to predict at least one rate hike in the coming year, as UK interest rates currently sit at 3.75%.
Megan Greene, an external member of the Bank's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), expressed her own concerns about volatile energy and commodity costs. She suggested that a risk management strategy is necessary to mitigate potential losses.
Bailey also highlighted the ongoing Middle East conflict as a factor driving up energy prices, which could lead to further volatility in financial markets.
